Poste Italiane announces that on October 14, the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy issued a postage stamp as part of the thematic series “Excellences of Italian Cultural Heritage”, dedicated to UNIMORE – University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, on the occasion of its 850th anniversary.
Italy – The stamp, which commemorates the legacy of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, has a B rate valueequal to €1.30. The print run includes 200,025 copies, with each sheet containing forty-five stamps.
The Stamp
The stamp is printed by the Italian State Printing Works and Mint (Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato S.p.A.)using rotogravure on white, neutral coated, self-adhesive paper with optical brightener.
The design, created by Tiziana Trinca, features the Gonfalone (ceremonial banner) of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, depicting Saint Geminianus on horseback giving a blessing, framed within a Gothic quadrilobed border. In the background stands a crenellated structure identified as the 14th-century Este Castle in Modena.
The stamp also includes the inscriptions “UNIMORE,” “850 YEARS,” “UNIVERSITÀ DEGLI STUDI DI MODENA E REGGIO EMILIA,” “ITALIA,” and the “B” postage rate. The first day postmark will be available at the Modena Centro Post Office.
The stamp and related philatelic products—including postcards, cards, and illustrated bulletins—will be available at post offices with philatelic counters, in the “Spazio Filatelia” locations in Florence, Genoa, Milan, Naples, Rome, Rome 1, Turin, Trieste and Verona.
The University of Modena and Reggio Emilia
The University of Modena was founded in 1175, a few years after the establishment of the University of Bologna, by decree of the Municipality of Modena and funded through local taxation.
The Modena university is therefore rightfully considered one of the oldest academic institutions in both Italy and the world. Its history has been closely tied to the fortunes of the Este family, rulers of the Modena region.
