A Ribbon for Peace: The Schools’ Appeal against War

2 Mins read

The CNDDU invites all Italian educational institutions to make a symbolic gesture to promote nonviolence and international dialogue in a moment of serious global crisis

The National Coordination of Human Rights Teachers expresses deep concern over the dramatic military escalation in the Middle East following the United States’ attack on Iranian nuclear sites and the subsequent reactions from Iran, including missile launches towards Israel and an explosion near the Bushehr nuclear power plant.

In an already fragile international context, a scenario of extremely high-risk war is looming on the horizon, one in which world powers and millions of innocent citizens could be involved. The statements of political leaders, dominated by bellicose tones and a logic of opposition, leave little room for hope unless the course is immediately reversed towards dialogue and diplomacy.

As CNDDU, we strongly reiterate that war is never the solution. Peace, respect for international law, and the protection of civilian populations must remain the cornerstone principles of global political action.

In this summer season, when many schools are closed but not turned off in their educational mission, we address a symbolic and concrete appeal to all Italian educational institutions: let’s display the peace flag or, where not possible, a ribbon with the colors of the peace flag alongside the Italian flag outside of every school building as a visible and collective sign of commitment to nonviolence and dialogue among peoples.

We are aware that current regulations limit the display of flags other than institutional ones in public buildings. Therefore, we propose the “ribbon with the colors of the peace flag” as a valid symbolic alternative: a small gesture, respectful of the regulations, but full of civic and human significance.

The ribbon with the colors of the peace flag, applied to the national flag or placed next to it, represents a simple but powerful message: a call for unity, solidarity, and Italy’s civic vocation as a promoter of peace in the world.

Even during the summer months, schools can and must speak to the country. Peace is an educational choice, before it is a political one. At a time when the risk of a global conflict is real, it is essential that schools – guardians of democratic values and custodians of civic conscience – send out a strong, united, and unequivocal message.

We ask the Minister of Education and Merit, Prof. Giuseppe Valditara, to promote and support this initiative by officially inviting all Italian schools to display the peace flag – where compatible with regulations – or alternatively the peace ribbon next to the Italian flag, during the summer period and at the beginning of the school year.

It would be a gesture of great symbolic and educational value, capable of uniting the world of school under a sign of hope, responsibility, and active citizenship.

We appeal to the entire school community – school leaders, teachers, staff, students, families – not to remain indifferent. Even a simple gesture, like displaying a flag or a ribbon, can help build a culture of peace.
