The winners of the Laureus World Sports Awards have been announced. Alcaraz and Sabalenka are the athletes of the year. Among the stars of the ceremony was also Bebe Vio Grandis from Mogliano.
MADRID – An emotional ceremony that brought together the greatest faces of current and past world sports. In Madrid last night, the Laureus World Sports Awards were held, honoring the best athletes of the past year. There were eleven categories with some surprises.
Presenting the Gran Galà of world sports, for the first time two former winners of the award, both still active: tennis player Novak Djokovic and freestyle skier Eileen Gu.
The nominees for the Laureus World Sports Awards have been decided by media from around the world, and the winners voted on by the 69 members of the Laureus World Sports Academy, an elite sports jury. This year, the Academy has also included new discretionary awards.
Tennis was the main focus, with both awards for the best male and female athlete of the year going to Carlos Alcaraz (among the candidates was also Sinner) and Aryna Sabalenka. The title of best team of the year went to Paris Saint-Germain, winner of all the trophies from last season except for the Club World Cup (lost in the final to Chelsea).
The Formula 1 World Champion Lando Norris was awarded as the revelation of the year. The comeback of the year went to golfer Rory McIlroy. Next was the award for action sports athlete given to snowboarder Chloe Kim. The award for the best Paralympic athlete was presented by Bebe Vio Grandis from Mogliano to swimmer Gabriel Araújo, with Simone Barlaam also in the running.
A new award has also been established for the best young player, which went to the Spanish player from Barcelona Lamine Yamal.
There were also touching moments, such as the awarding of former footballer Toni Kroos with the Laureus Sporting Inspiration Award, but especially the surprise lifetime achievement award given to one of the founders of the Laureus Foundation. Fifty years after the first perfect 10, Nadia Comăneci, the greatest gymnast in history, was honored.
This year, the list of honorees includes three more Laureus winners, the statuette awarded to the winner in each category and the prize that the greatest athletes in the world value more than any other: Nadia Comăneci, 50 years after the Perfect 10 that made sports history, Lamine Yamal, a global star at the beginning of his journey, and Toni Kroos after a career as a serial winner with Real Madrid.
