The inseparable, Mona and her thirty-year-old son Jöel live in dependence and on the edge of their own individuality
Directed by Anne-Sophie Bailly and set in Creteil, a town near Paris, the film, presented at Venice 2024 in the Horizons section, is above all a lyric to love.
Mona (Laure Calamy), a sixty-year-old single mother, lives with her thirty-year-old son Jöel (Charles Peccia-Galletto) in a cramped apartment on the outskirts. Her son, who has a mild intellectual disability and works at a center for disabled people, falls in love with a colleague, Océane (Julie Froger), who is also disabled, and confesses this to his mother.
So far nothing extremely transcendental, except for one more detail: the girl is pregnant, and this new scenario becomes absolutely difficult for Mona.
Touching and empathetic, the movie, which already received favorable reviews from both critics and the audience at the Venice Film Festival, is a work that leaves nothing unexplored and focuses the narrative plot on a dual track, that of disability and the bond between mother and son.
A true path of double emancipation, complex and grateful for love, which in this painful story illuminates the actors, making the normal daily refrain poetic.
With all the love needed to face love, which can sometimes be what you have, but also what you must let go of, between freedom and emotional dependency.
