Artificial intelligence is already making decisions for you: this is how it influences you.

2 Mins read

Did you know that there is a high likelihood that you have already made several decisions today without realizing that they were guided by artificial intelligence?

Let’s talk, for example, about the series you chose on Netflix or the route you followed thanks to the GPS; the game recommended to you by a live casino platform or the results that appeared when you searched on Google: all these elements have something in common, namely the work of an algorithm that, starting from information about the individual, intervened quickly even before awareness arrived.

Is something on screen? It’s not there by chance

Digital platforms are designed to simulate a significant sense of freedom, but they don’t come that way: they are specifically engineered for this purpose. The suggestions, the order of content, or even the colors and visual stimuli respond to calculated decisions to capture your attention; in this way, what seem like spontaneous choices are actually influenced by a pre-determined design!

Even when exploring the web, it is done within a framework that prioritizes what is most likely to keep you engaged longer or what is most needed by the site owner: over time, this dynamic influences the usage habits of platforms. This reinforces usage patterns that have become critically important in computing.

There are many digital environments where artificial intelligence goes beyond simply suggesting, but contributes to making decision-making faster. Intuitive interfaces, immediate rewards, and constant stimuli create a context in which choosing becomes increasingly quick and fluid.

Confirming this pattern are the usage and consumption data related to individual platforms: in 2024, users dedicated an average of 143 minutes per day to social networks, more than 16 hours per week; this time seems to be concentrated especially on platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube where algorithms prioritize interaction over mere reach.

As a result, the user reflects less and starts to act on impulse: the immediacy of the platforms plays a key role as it reduces the time between the arrival of the suggestion and the user’s action.

The shorter this interval, the greater the likelihood that the decision does not go through a conscious analysis: this type of dynamic is especially repeated on platforms where there is continuous interaction, variable incentives, or reward systems designed to keep attention high.

How artificial intelligence shapes your habits

Beyond individual moments, real influence emerges over the long term.
Artificial intelligence learns from every click, every pause, and every choice as it feeds on data and builds an increasingly accurate profile of those browsing the web. In the long term, this means dealing with a tool that allows for changing the way decisions are made in general.

The final result is clear: this allows for the creation of an environment where making choices seems simple, but where much of the path has already been laid out in advance. This new situation is not necessarily “negative”: in many cases, AI helps to simplify processes, save time, and enhance the overall digital experience.

All these notions ultimately raise a relevant question: to what extent do we really decide in solitude? To what extent do we, as users, respond to environments designed to influence the decisions we make?

The difference between assistive tools and conditioning systems is more subtle than it seems.
