The exhibition on the projects and sketches of the Vittoriano Factory inaugurated at the Central State Archive
ROME – The Minister of Culture Alessandro Giuli inaugurated the exhibition “Building the Nation. The Designs of the Vittoriano Factory” at the Central State Archive, promoted together with the Institute for the History of the Italian Risorgimento.
The exhibition presents a selection of over 6,000 technical drawings, sketches, and drafts that document the entire construction history of the monument: from the initial competitions to the definition of the decorative apparatus, up to the symbolic role taken on by the Altar of the Fatherland after the burial of the Unknown Soldier.
Giuli emphasized how the Vittoriano represents “a cornerstone of our regained unity,” recalling the historical and identity value of the monument. The Superintendent Giovanna Giubbini highlighted the importance of the recent safeguarding intervention that allowed for the transfer and preservation of the archival fund, making it accessible to the public today.
The General Director of Archives Antonio Tarasco emphasized the significance of the exhibited materials, a symbol of the construction of united Italy, while Alessandro Campi, director of the Institute for the History of the Risorgimento, provided a historical interpretation that connects the story of the Vittoriano to the evolution of national identity.
The exhibition path is divided into five sections: from the urban transformations of the chosen area to the architectural projects, from the technological innovations of the construction site to the rich decorative apparatus, culminating in a focus on the Altare della Patria.
The exhibition will be open for free from December 3, 2025, Monday to Friday, from 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM, at the Central State Archive.
