LIMA (PERU) – Great performance by the Italian team at the Foil Grand Prix in Lima. In the women’s event, Alice Volpi returns to victory with Martina Favaretto taking bronze. In the men’s event, Guillaume Bianchi triumphs, thus repeating his success in Turin. This is an important result, especially since it was achieved in the elite World Cup circuit, where only individual competitions with higher points are scheduled.
The next international appointment for the foil of CT Simone Vanni is scheduled in Egypt from April 16 to 19, when the World Cup stage for both men and women will be held in Cairo.
The return of Alice Volpi
It had been almost two years since the last victory, from Tbilisi in April 2024. And here Alice Volpi finally achieves it, starting from the qualifiers no less. Thus comes the twelfth gold in her career in World Cup and the twenty-ninth podium for an extraordinary athlete who is already a two-time world champion.
The blue athlete easily defeated the Brazilian Mariana Pistoia (15-1) and the Japanese Sumire Tsuji (15-12). In the round of 16, the Tuscan won the blue derby against captain Arianna Errigo with the last touch (15-14). The quarter-final was simpler against the Ukrainian Olga Sopit (15-6).
But the climb was just beginning, Volpi wins at the last touch against the American Katerina Lung (15-14). In the final act, the match against the other American Lauren Scruggs was won 15-11.
Favaretto turns seventeen
Great performance also for the Noale athlete Martina Favaretto. She was a bit disappointed to have to miss the home Grand Prix in Turin, so her desire for redemption was huge. The twenty-four-year-old from Noale started by defeating the Uzbek Volobueva (15-7), and then won the Italian derby against Margherita Lorenzi (15-11).
Thanks to the withdrawal of the German Kleibrink, the Italian athlete went directly to the quarter-finals where she defeated the other German Leonie Ebert. In the semi-finals, a very tight match against the American Lauren Scruggs ended with the latter winning 15-12 after being tied at 12. Nevertheless, it marks the third medal of the season for the athlete from Veneto in four competitions held.
Bianchi twice
Another success for the new dad Guillaume Bianchi. After the triumph at the Grand Prix in Turin, he secures his second consecutive gold, marking his tenth career podium in the World Cup (fourth of the season).
The Italian’s journey began by defeating the Japanese Ryosuke Fukuda (15-9) and the Korean Cheolwoo Im (15-5). In the round of 16, he faced the Russian Anton Borodachev (15-9). The Roman then went on to compete for a medal against the athlete from Hong Kong Shing Him Harris Ho (15-12).
After escaping danger, the 28-year-old Italian also defeated the Czech Alexander Choupenitch (15-10). The final act saw him face the Russian Kirill Borodachev. Victory came at 15-12, marking his second career podium in Lima after last year’s silver behind compatriot Filippo Macchi.
This way, in addition to the second consecutive gold, there is also the fourth podium of the season, the tenth of his career, after the bronzes in Palma de Mallorca and Paris.
