A symbol to protect and enhance a Venetian excellence that encompasses art, tradition, and future
BURANO (VE) – On Sunday, June 22, the official logo that will accompany the path towards obtaining the Geographical Indication (IGP) for Burano Lace was presented in the charming setting of the Venissa restaurant on the island of Mazzorbo. An initiative strongly supported by Massimiliano Zane, president of the “Il Merletto di Burano” Association, and by the municipal assessor for Commerce Sebastiano Costalonga, to combat counterfeiting and enhance one of the most precious artisanal treasures of the Lagoon.
The logo, created by Lorenzo Ammendola, will be placed on all authentic products, accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. Its unveiling coincided symbolically with the International Lace Day, strengthening the connection between the art of lace making and its recognition at the European level.
Costalonga explained that the IGP certification will guarantee consumers quality and origin, protecting an ancient tradition at risk of extinction. Along with the logo, a production specification and a technical committee composed of four master lacemakers have also been defined to ensure high quality standards.
During the meeting, rich in institutional interventions and testimonials, the urgency of passing on knowledge to new generations emerged. In this perspective, the training project “L1 WE – Artisan Lace of Burano”, promoted by the Andriana Marcello Foundation and funded by the Veneto Region, will offer ten young people the opportunity to train for one year within the sector.
“It is the first concrete step,” Zane stated, “to not lose a centuries-old art that has made Burano famous worldwide.”
Now, with lace, we are also looking at a revival of Venetian craftsmanship in a broader sense, as highlighted by Councilor Costalonga: “We are also working to protect Murano Glass, Venetian shipbuilding, and the art of mask makers. The Venetian identity is defended by starting from its roots.”
