On February 17th, Italy and Poland celebrate the feline world
Our feline friends have several days dedicated to them throughout the year. World Cat Day, established to promote cat adoptions, is celebrated worldwide on August 8th. On November 17th, there is a day entirely dedicated to black cats, aiming to debunk all the false myths associating this feline with bad luck. In Japan, it is celebrated on February 22nd, in the United States on October 29th, and in Russia on March 1st.
Everyone crazy for cats
Today, February 17th is National Cat Day, established in 1990. The chosen day is the 17th because, if we want to see it in more positive terms, it can mean that a cat lives 1 life for 7 times!
Furthermore, February is the month of cats and witches, mysterious characters full of incredible powers. It is also the month of Aquarius, the zodiac sign of free spirits, a trait often associated with these felines, naturally independent but also great companions and friends in a way so special that it sometimes surpasses human beings.
Every cat, like every dog and other animal of a different species, is a unique and unrepeatable being, with its character more or less dependent on its human friend.
Unfortunately, there are several prejudices about cats that are difficult to overcome, and many people do not like them. Phrases like this are often heard: “Oh no, I don’t like cats because they are opportunistic, they only come to you for food, they scratch, they dirty, they don’t bond with anyone…” but when asked, “how many cats have you had?” the answer is always, “oh no, I have never wanted cats!”.

According to the 2019 Censis data, Italy is the European country with the highest number of pets. 52% of families have a pet. There are a total of 32 million pets, including 12.9 million birds, 7.5 million cats, 7 million dogs, 1.8 million small mammals (hamsters and rabbits), 1.6 million fish, and 1.3 million reptiles. Therefore, cats rank very well in this classification, even though, as animal associations report, the number of pets in households has increased during the lockdown, especially for dogs and cats.
Unfortunately, the civilization of sterilizing stray cats is not yet embraced by many, so it is necessary to intervene when the female cats are already pregnant or nursing. The appeal, on this day dedicated to them, is to adopt, and sterilize, because the love that a cat can give, will be forever.
