Unlucky draw for the Women’s National Basketball Team at the upcoming World Cup in Germany. Italy placed in Group D with the United States, China, and Czechia
BERLIN – The draw for the groups of the FIBA Women’s World Cup 2026 took place yesterday in Berlin, which will be held in the German city from September 4 to 13, 2026. Italy has been placed in the challenging group D, which also includes United States, China, and Czech Republic.
The Azzurre will make their debut against the latter on September 4 at the Max-Schmeling-Hall. Two days later, it will be the turn of the reigning world and Olympic champions from the United States. Finally, on the 7th, it will be China, the finalist alongside the Americans in the last edition.
The winners of the four groups will advance directly to the Quarter-finals, while the second and third placed teams will play a playoff. The fourth placed teams will be eliminated. If they advance, the Azzurre will face a team from Group C consisting of Belgium, Australia, Puerto Rico, and Turkey.

The words of Andrea Capobianco: “After the European Championship, we faced another definitely complicated draw, as two teams from our group are the finalists of the last World Cup. We will go to Germany to fight hard; we haven’t been to a World Cup for 32 years, but I have great confidence and respect for these girls who have always impressed us with their readiness and determination. We want to go to Berlin focusing on our own game, as we did both at the European Championship and the pre-World Cup, trying to raise the bar even higher and knowing perfectly that these teams punish every mistake made by their opponents. Therefore, we will need incredible attention to tackle these complex challenges possession by possession, and then lift our eyes to see how it went.”
