Digital health is making strides to improve patient care and life. A recent international webinar, “_Modern Rectal & Pelvic Cancer Surgery. Prevention and treatment of fecal and genito-urinary dysfunctions_”, highlighted how specialists from Europe and Asia are collaborating to integrate the latest innovations in pelvic oncological surgery.
ROME. The event featured experts from prestigious institutions such as Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou (China), Tor Vergata University in Rome, and Jurong Health Campus in Singapore. The main objective was to explore the most advanced surgical techniques, functional rehabilitation pathways, and the growing role of digital technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), telemedicine, electronic health records, and wearable devices.
Professors Wei Bo and Yan Zhang from Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou opened the proceedings, emphasizing that modern oncological surgery requires close collaboration between clinical expertise, scientific research, and technological innovation. Professor Emmanuele Jannini from Tor Vergata University addressed the topic of post-treatment oncosexuology for pelvic tumors, highlighting the importance of considering patients’ quality of life in care pathways.
Professor Giuseppe Sica, Chair of Surgery and Director of Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgery at Tor Vergata University Hospital, discussed the functional issues that may arise after rectal cancer surgeries. “Modern oncological surgery – stated Prof. Giuseppe Sica – can no longer be limited to the success of the surgical intervention. Today, the real challenge is to ensure patients not only survive but also have a good quality of life. This requires centralization, research, advanced technologies, and a multidisciplinary approach that integrates surgery, rehabilitation, and clinical outcome analysis.”
During the webinar, Professor Seow Choon Sheong from Jurong Health Campus in Singapore illustrated the organizational model adopted in the city-state’s healthcare system for managing colorectal cancer, while Professor Wei Bo presented the latest experiences in nerve-sparing surgery and functional rehabilitation pathways.
A particular focus was dedicated to new applications of robotic surgery in the treatment of urological neoplasms, presented by Professor Yun Luo from Sun Yat-sen University.
According to the Digital Health Observatory of the AIDR Foundation, this international comparison demonstrates how technological innovation, surgical robotics, clinical data analysis, and personalized medicine are redefining the future of healthcare systems. Consequently, it is increasingly urgent to invest in digital health and research so that technological innovation can translate into more effective, accessible, and quality-oriented patient care.
