Double bronze for the Italian men’s foil team and women’s sabre. Italy’s medal count rises to eleven at the European Championships in Genoa
GENOA – Penultimate day of competitions and another two wonderful medals for Italy. At the 2025 European Fencing Championships in Genoa, the Italian teams in men’s epee and women’s sabre win two more bronze medals.
An excellent result for both teams, especially considering the ongoing generational change and the presence of two debutants for each side. The men’s team, in fact, featured the veteran Andrea Santarelli, the young but experienced Davide Di Veroli, and then two debutants, individual silver medalist Matteo Galassi and Gianpaolo Buzzacchino.
Similar situation for the sabre fencers, led by the thirty-seven-year-old Friulian Michela Battiston and Chiara Mormile. The quartet is then completed by the young Manuela Spica and the twenty-year-old Mariella Viale.
A result that equals the loot conquered last year in Basel, with still two matches to be played today. The male foil vice Olympic champion and the champions of the sword who have always given us so much satisfaction. The bronze and then gold medal finals will be broadcast live from 3.30 pm on RAI Sport and Sky Sport.

The men’s sabre team started smoothly with an easy 45-21 victory against Estonia. The next match against Switzerland was more challenging, but they managed to win 40-37.
No luck for the Italian fencers in the semifinal against France. The French team wins 45-33, sending Italy to compete for the bronze against Germany. Here, the Italian team takes the lead from the start and doesn’t let go until defeating the Germans 40-28, thus securing the first medal of the day.
Sabre fencers on the podium
Not even an hour passes and the blues are still rejoicing. The team composed of Michela Battiston, Chiara Mormile, Mariella Viale, and Manuela Spica clinches another bronze medal with the final thrust and brings the Italian team back to the podium two years after Krakow 2023.
The blue saber fencers started their journey by defeating the “neutral” Russian athletes 45-38. Next up was Spain, who fell 45-40. In the semifinal, they faced their toughest opponent, France, who won 45-37. The battle for bronze was against Hungary, in a match where the Hungarian team always had the lead, but the blue team never allowed them to pull too far ahead. The comeback was led by Chiara Mormile, and then Michela Battiston took on the responsibility and honor of delivering the decisive thrust for the 45-44 victory.
