Directed by Michel Franco, it tells the story of Fernando, a young Mexican dancer who dreams of the United States of America through his talent

Presented to the public during the 75th edition of the Berlin International Film Festival, competing for the Golden Bear, the film featuring Jessica Chastain (Jennifer) and Isaac Hernández (Fernando) seems, despite its distant themes, to navigate around the realms of Flashdance, without a soundtrack, with a love story where the age difference and status obviously won’t make things easy. But it’s just an initial frame, a jolt, and the direction immediately moves away from the 80s cult movie, shifting without hesitation to the difficult relationship between Fernando and Jennifer, challenging not only due to the generational gap but also because of social inequality, exacerbated by the fact that Fernando has entered the U.S. illegally from Mexico. The attractive Jennifer, a philanthropist and heir to a dynasty that will have enough wealth and resources for the next generations without breaking a sweat, flirts without scruples with Fernando, but it is immediately clear that the edge is fragile and dangerous, full of pitfalls for the promising dancer, rich in talent stripped away by his lack of citizenship, seeking a place in the sun in San Francisco. With conventions that cannot crumble, even in the name of a passion, of a love that becomes impossible. And in the end, it takes a turn that nullifies everything beautiful seen from the beginning, with a utopian and frayed story that could have been believable, as long as it didn’t go off the rails. Leaving nothing in hand, only resentment and unattainable dreams.
