The famous twins passed away together, voluntarily, at the age of 89
Alice and Ellen were born in East Germany on August 20, 1936, and at just 18 years old, they had fled together. They took refuge in what was then West Germany. They were already two well-known dancers and went on to dance around the world, especially in Italy where they even became “the legs of the nation.”
Between the 60s and 70s, the Kessler twins participated in various television shows, such as La prova del nove and Canzonissima, creating numerous songs. They were featured in Carosello scenes for a brand of women’s stockings. Their legs caused a scandal, and RAI imposed the use of heavy dark nylon stockings in their shows.
Always together
They never got married and did not have children. Despite having had several romantic relationships, they always preferred their union, until death.
They had also chosen the date of their death, which occurred yesterday, November 17. And they had turned to an agency that assists people with suicide.
Assisted suicide
In Germany, “assisted dying” is allowed under certain conditions: the person must, among other things, “act autonomously and of their own free will,” self-administering the lethal drug, as well as being of legal age and having legal capacity. The assistant cannot perform the lethal act: this would be “active euthanasia,” which is instead prohibited.
