VENETO. In the heart of the splendid Veneto region, the Venetian Villas represent a timeless symbol of grace and architectural beauty.
Behind their current splendor lies a story of commitment, passion, and determination, embodied in the figure of Giuseppe Mazzotti.
Born in Treviso in 1907, Mazzotti not only made a significant contribution to the revival of the Venetian Villas, but also deeply influenced the Italian cultural scene of the 20th century. His diverse education, which took him from the Riccati technical-mathematical Institute to the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice, made him a versatile individual, capable of appreciating and enhancing art in all its forms.
It was during the post-World War II period that Mazzotti distinguished himself for his strong commitment to preserving the heritage of the Venetian Villas. Faced with the threat of neglect, decay, and property speculation, Mazzotti embarked on a concrete battle for the preservation of these historic residences.
One of the crucial stages of this journey was the exhibition on the Venetian Villas held in 1951 in Treviso, promoted by the provincial tourism authorities of the Veneto region. The enormous success of this exhibition, which attracted the attention of national and international press and public, prompted the Italian government to pass a law to establish the Authority for the Venetian Villas, with the aim of restoring and enhancing these architectural gems.
Mazzotti’s legacy is not limited to the recovery of the Venetian Villas, but also extends to his contribution to Italian culture. As an art critic and organizer of nationally and internationally renowned exhibitions, Mazzotti influenced the artistic scene of the time, collaborating with important figures such as Arturo Martini and Dino Buzzati.
His passion for the mountains, evident in his writings and works, reflected his deep attachment to nature and alpine culture. This love for the mountains also manifested in his commitment to the protection of the alpine environment, demonstrating his sensitivity towards environmental and cultural issues.
Thanks to the tireless work of Mazzotti and his collaborators, in 1958 the Ente Ville Venete was established, marking the beginning of a new era for the safeguarding of this extraordinary heritage. Today, the Venetian Villas continue to shine like precious gems in the Italian cultural landscape, testifying to the power of vision and commitment to preserving our history and identity.
Gambrinus Mazzotti Literary Award
The Gambrinus Mazzotti Literary Award, established in 1982 to commemorate the figure and work of the great writer, essayist, and art critic, aims to highlight the most deserving works in the field of mountain literature, exploration, and ecology.
The Prize, sponsored and supported by the Municipality of San Polo di Piave, the Veneto Region, the Province of Treviso, the Italian Touring Club, the Italian Alpine Club, and the Veneto Craftsmanship Association, as well as numerous other associations and private companies, is reserved for works written or translated into Italian, published from January 1, 2021, to April 30, 2023.
Since the twenty-seventh edition (2009) onwards, the organization of the Award has been defined in six Sections, divided into two trios on a biennial rotation: every year three works are awarded, one for each section of the trio.
