Global agreement reached to combat pandemics

It took a whopping 3 years of negotiations at the WHO to approve the new global agreement to combat any future pandemics

“WHO Member States have taken an important step forward in efforts to make the world safer from pandemics by drafting an agreement to be considered at the next World Health Assembly in May,” writes WHO in a statement.

“We reached the agreement at 2 in the morning,” said a delegate to AFP, as they were getting ready to uncork the champagne.

Historic Agreement

“The nations of the world made history today in Geneva,” stated WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

“Reaching consensus on the pandemic agreement, they have not only established a generational agreement to make the world safer, but also demonstrated that multilateralism is alive and well and that in our divided world nations can still work together to find common ground and a shared response to common threats.”

“Although it has been subject to numerous compromises, it contains many positive elements that allow for establishing a new framework for a fairer and more just preparation and response to pandemics in the future,” commented Doctors Without Borders.

The agreement reached will be submitted to the final vote during the General Assembly starting on May 19th.
