Pierpaolo Morciano’s 26th birthday party turned into a tragedy when inhaling nitrous oxide, known as the “laughing gas”, proved fatal for him.
Alessano (LE). The episode, which took place yesterday evening in Alessano, a small town in the province of Lecce, has shocked the local community. Pierpaolo, who lived with his mother and worked seasonally in restaurants in the area, was celebrating with friends near his home.
According to the initial reconstructions by the carabinieri, the young man inhaled gas from a balloon, a common practice among consumers of this recreational substance. Shortly after, he suddenly felt unwell. His friends immediately alerted the emergency services, but there was nothing they could do for Pierpaolo: his heart stopped beating before the ambulance arrived.
A growing phenomenon
Nitrous oxide, legal in Italy for medical and industrial uses, is increasingly being used in recreational contexts, especially among young people. Easily available at a low cost – a canister can be purchased online for around 30 euros – it is inhaled through balloons. The substance, capable of causing euphoria and mental lightness, is however extremely dangerous.
According to Cristina Cadoni, toxicologist at the Institute of Neuroscience of the CNR, gas can cause devastating effects even after limited use. “It can cause hypoxia, cardiac arrest, and damage to the central nervous system, as well as neuropathies, balance problems, and cognitive alterations in case of prolonged use,” explains the expert.
In many countries, including the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, the recreational use of nitrous oxide has been banned, but in Italy there is still no specific legislation to limit its spread. The ease of access and the short duration of its effects make it particularly attractive to young people, fueling a phenomenon that is spreading even in musical and sports contexts.
The news of Pierpaolo’s death has shocked Alessano. “There are no words to describe such a tragedy,” said deputy mayor Marcello Casi. “Pierpaolo was a quiet boy, like many others, and no one expected such a drama. We are all close to the mother, an extraordinary woman who has always done her best for the family.”
A warning to the young
This episode, unfortunately not isolated, serves as a warning about the risks associated with the consumption of substances that may seem harmless but are extremely dangerous. The hope is that Pierpaolo’s tragedy will prompt reflection on the importance of greater awareness of the dangers associated with drug use and the need to regulate the phenomenon to prevent its spread.
