The international conference in Mestre outlines the new frontiers of vascular surgery, presenting cutting-edge techniques for the treatment of venous pathologies.
MESTRE – A highly relevant conference for vascular surgery professionals is scheduled for April 19 and 20 in Mestre at the Laguna Palace Hotel, focusing on the use of increasingly advanced surgical techniques in terms of effectiveness, safety, and minimally invasive approaches for the treatment of venous vascular system pathologies.
Over 200 doctors and 51 speakers from Italy and both European and non-European countries are expected to attend. The event is promoted by the team of specialists from Villa Salus Hospital: Dr. Pier Giovanni Bianchi, Dr. Luca Palombi, Dr. Fabio Martinelli, and Dr. Angelo Gabriele Chiappetta.
The advancement of technologies
Venous insufficiency is a condition that affects 35-40% of the population, especially women, and significantly impacts the quality of life of individuals. Until a few years ago, the only solution offered by medicine was surgical intervention aimed at the so-called “stripping,” which involved removing the affected varicose vein. Nowadays, several other technologies are available, which are less invasive and have fewer side effects. The most advanced of these technologies are available at the Villa Salus in Mestre, a national and international center of excellence in this field.
“This international conference – explains Dr. Bianchi – comes after a path that our team has undertaken through our experience over about ten years of working together both in the operating room and in outpatient activities, as well as through interactions with foreign colleagues during other congresses (this is the fourth one we are organizing) as well as in other conferences we have attended in Italy and abroad. We have also had the opportunity to host numerous workshops at Villa Salus Hospital where we have compared and tested our accumulated work over the years with that of other colleagues. We were among the first in Italy to adopt new minimally invasive technologies for the treatment of venous insufficiency. Today we are able to offer extremely personalized solutions for the patient with different types of interventions, under local anesthesia: thermoablation, hybrid techniques like S.F.A.L.T. (which combines thermoablation with sclerotherapy), mechanical-chemical ablation (rotational and non-rotational), occlusion with cyanoacrylate using a microcatheter or by direct puncture, and ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy”.
All these solutions do not require conventional surgical intervention, but they take advantage of endovascular technologies that allow us to perform procedures through micro-incisions or only venipuncture. Therefore, these are outpatient procedures, also available in the National Health Service, which do not require hospitalization. The regimen of these new techniques is now defined as “walk-in walk-out”.
“The administration – explains the health director Maurizio Agnoletto – has chosen to invest heavily in recent years in the most advanced equipment and technologies. A choice that pays off in terms of numbers: from 2018 to March 2024, here at Villa Salus, we have performed more than 2958 advanced phlebo-surgeries, but it’s not just about numbers but about the quality of the procedures. Even during the peak of Covid, we have always been operational.”
