Internet addiction disorder: internet addiction

2 Mins read

The rapid evolution of digital connectivity has brought about new challenges, among which the emerging issue of Internet addiction stands out.

Digital technologies, the internet, social networks, and instant messaging apps have revolutionized the way we live, enabling instant communication and breaking down geographical barriers. This increasing connectivity has paved the way for a universe of opportunities and global connections, but it has also led to the emergence of new risks, pitfalls, and dependencies, including Internet addiction.

Internet addiction, also known as Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD), is a compulsive behavior related to the excessive use of the internet and digital devices connected to the network. Like other forms of non-substance behavioral addiction, such as compulsive shopping, gambling, and sex addiction, IAD can compromise the psychophysical well-being of those who suffer from it.

Although internet addiction is not yet universally recognized as a distinct clinical condition, there are identifiable psychological and physical manifestations that can be considered symptomatic of this addiction. The progressive loss of control is a distinctive feature of IAD, with those affected experiencing an exponential increase in hours spent online.

Doctor Valeria Fiorenza Perris, Psychotherapist and Clinical Director of the online psychology service Unobravo, explains that individuals affected by this addiction can spend hours online, browsing websites, using social media, chatting, playing video games, watching videos, or making online purchases.

Different forms of IAD

Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD) can take many different forms due to the wide range of activities available online. Some develop a more generalized addiction, while others have a more specific propensity. Among the most common forms of internet addiction, we find:

  • Internet Gaming Disorder: Internet addiction and video game addiction are often linked, especially with the rise of online gaming platforms.
  • Online Shopping Addiction: This is the addiction to shopping, but focused on the online world, with individuals developing compulsive buying behaviors on the internet.
  • Cybersexual Addiction: Those who suffer from this addiction dedicate a lot of time to consuming online pornography or visiting adult chat rooms.
  • Cyber-Relational Addiction: Characterized by a tendency to form relationships online, this form of addiction can lead to neglecting offline relationships.
  • Information Overload: Cognitive overload occurs when the individual obsessively seeks information on the web, often overlapping with other clinical conditions such as cyberchondria.
  • Social Media Addiction: Social media addiction occurs when the use of these platforms escapes the user’s control, becoming compulsive.
  • Internet addiction can have serious consequences on the mental and physical health of those involved. Therefore, it is crucial to promote a conscious and balanced use of technology, educating people on how to manage their online presence in a healthy way. Only through increased awareness and the implementation of self-control strategies, can we mitigate the negative effects of this addiction and ensure a healthy and responsible use of digital technologies.
