Is staying up late a sign of intelligence?

1 Mins read

According to a recent study, people who tend to go to bed late and wake up later are generally more intelligent compared to those who follow a more traditional sleep cycle, going to bed early.

The research, conducted by a team of academics from Imperial College London, examined the cognitive abilities of individuals with different sleep habits, revealing surprising results.

The study involved a large sample of participants, divided into two groups: the night owls, who stay up late and wake up later, and the early birds, who go to bed early and wake up early. The participants underwent a series of cognitive tests, designed to assess their reasoning abilities, intelligence, memory, and reaction times.

The results indicated that those who go to bed later and wake up later scored higher on intelligence and reasoning tests compared to early risers. This data suggests that night owls may have a greater ability to adapt to new and complex situations, despite the common perception associating staying up late with less healthy behaviors.

Researchers believe that this difference may be linked to greater mental stimulation in the evening hours, when the environment is less hectic and there are fewer distractions, allowing for better focus on cognitive activities. Additionally, the tendency to stay up late may be associated with higher creativity and intellectual curiosity.

This study opens up new perspectives on the link between the sleep-wake cycle and cognitive abilities, suggesting that nocturnal habits may not necessarily be negative, but may actually offer advantages in terms of intelligence and reasoning skills. However, researchers emphasize that further investigations are needed to fully understand the implications of these results and to assess whether and how these habits can be integrated into a healthy lifestyle.
