Let’s spread the word about Alateen

The testimony of an Al-Anon member emphasizing the importance of this association

“I am a member of Al-Anon and currently serve as an Alateen Group Sponsor. Being the daughter of an alcoholic, I deeply understand the importance of this program. Reflecting on the Eleventh Tradition, I believe that promoting good attraction is crucial even within Al-Anon itself. However, Alateen, in my opinion, is still little known or only superficially understood.

Many members of Al-Anon, and even of Alcoholics Anonymous, if properly informed, might be more motivated to present this valuable opportunity to their children and grandchildren, involving them in the groups and allowing them to experience the benefits of the Alateen program. Those who have already brought their children to Alateen know how important it is to reassure and inspire parents who are still doubtful or fearful,” explains the man.

“Alateen Group Sponsors and former Sponsors can be very helpful by sharing their experiences and clarifying the roles and tasks performed within the groups. This can dispel doubts and misconceptions that often circulate about Alateen. It would be useful to talk about Alateen during Al-Anon meetings to spread greater awareness. Raising awareness about Alateen is crucial!”

Al-Anon members need to know that their children are not in any danger by attending. Bringing them to meetings and allowing them to listen to stories and share with peers is a precious gift. By hearing similar experiences, young people do not feel alone and do not get traumatized. It is important for parents to understand that Alateen is not a space where children will speak ill of them, but rather a place where they can express anxieties and thoughts in a safe way.”

“By sharing with their peers, young people will understand that they are not in danger, crazy, or wrong, but that they too are victims of the family disease of alcoholism. They will learn to better understand the situation and not blame their parents, accepting reality with greater serenity.”

Bringing our children to Alateen does not mean admitting to be imperfect parents, nor is it possible to do the program for them or change their character. We must accept, with humility (First Step), that we are powerless over their journey. Even Sponsors cannot make decisions for them: they must find their own path and support each other,” concludes the participant in the Al-Anon association.
