The conference titled “Mestre and the war. Eighty years after the end of the Second World War” will be held in Mestre on Friday, May 16, by Umberto Zane.
Mestre – Included in the schedule of “Le Città in Festa”, the Historical Studies Center of Mestre has organized for Friday afternoon, at 5:30 PM at the Candiani Cultural Center, a meeting on the topic of war in the Mestre area. Admission is free.
World War II told by its witnesses
“Mestre and the War: The Second World War as told by its witnesses” is the book by Umberto Zane, journalist and writer, from which the conference takes inspiration.
In the book, published by Mazzanti Libri, 2021, the protagonists are three: Mestre, the Second World War, and, above all, the people who lived through it. Through their memories, both grand and small, dramatic yet also humorous, whether linked to normal daily life or important political and military events, they vividly and passionately mark the passage of time in this story.
The challenge was to make these memories become homogeneous pieces of a mosaic that can help us understand what the last conflict in a territory like Mestre, near Venice (one of the “symbolic cities” of the fascist regime, both during the Fascist period and with the Social Republic), and the industrial area of Marghera (which becomes one of the primary targets of Allied bombings after September 8, 1943) was, and above all how it was experienced.
All of this, however, through an enjoyable and light reading, but not for this reason trivial. Firmly believing that “saved and narrated memory” is an important path, and still somewhat underestimated, not only to better understand our roots, but also the historical events that have shaped our existence.
