Mestre and Venice welcome a new space for art and culture
MESTRE (VE). The former Emeroteca officially transforms into the Art Emeroteca, an ambitious project realized by the Foundation Musei Civici and the Municipality of Venice. This regenerated space in the urban heart of Piazza Ferretto is now an innovative artistic production center, with 13 artist studios and a literary café, designed to become points of cultural and social reference.
An international contemporary art center
The Art Newspaper is designed to engage with national and international cultural realities, consolidating Venice’s role as a cutting-edge cultural hub. The project aims to connect young artists, critics, and citizens through spaces dedicated to creativity and culture.
The Mayor of Venice, Luigi Brugnaro, emphasized the importance of this urban regeneration: “This place represents a symbol of cultural innovation, thanks to the collaboration between public and private institutions. I invite everyone to live and animate these spaces, designed for the community and the future of our city.”
Artist Residencies 2024/2025
The workshops will host 13 artists, ten of whom selected through a public call for proposals by the Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation. For the first time, the new spaces also allow the participation of artistic collectives, expanding the offering of artist residencies in Italy. The workshops complement the well-known spaces of SS. Cosma e Damiano in Giudecca and Palazzo Carminati in San Stae.
Leading the project for 2024/2025 will be Antonio Grulli, curator selected through a public procedure, with a program designed to promote dialogue among artists, critics, and the public.
Lion’s Tail: the artwork that blends past and present
A distinctive touch is given by the work Lion’s Tail by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen, which enriches the facade of the Emeroteca. This sculpture, a symbol of Pop Art, serves as a bridge between tradition and innovation, engaging with the urban context and inviting the public to explore art.
The Literary Café: a place for everyone
The new Literary Café is an inclusive space, designed to welcome readers, artists, students, and families. With a modern culinary offer and a wide selection of publications, the café aims to be a cultural and social crossroads, hosting events and meetings in collaboration with local and international cultural entities.

The Art Newspaper Archive is getting ready to bring the city to life with a busy schedule of events:
- December 10, 2024: presentation of the artistic residences project with curator Antonio Grulli.
- December 14, 2024: Ad Alta Voce, breakfast with Sabrine El Mayel, author of Nessun dipinto mi spezzerà il cuore.
- January 18, 2025: breakfast with Giorgia Sallusti, author of In the Land of Cherry Trees.
- January 25, 2025: Sabrina Zuccato presents her book La levatrice di Nagyrév.
