ROME – In recent days, a meeting was held at Palazzo Chigi convened by the Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to assess the possible negotiation path towards peace in Ukraine, following recent talks at the White House.
The meeting was attended by the Vice President of the Council and Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani, the Vice President of the Council and Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Matteo Salvini, and the Minister of Defense Guido Crosetto.
During the summit, the opportunities for dialogue to achieve a “just peace” were analyzed, perspectives that have opened up in recent weeks. The key to the path remains the identification of solid and credible security guarantees for Ukraine, to be defined in close collaboration with the United States, European and Western partners.
Italy, in this context, is contributing with a proposal based on a collective security defense mechanism, inspired by the Article 5 of the Washington Treaty, which governs mutual defense among NATO member countries.
It was also reiterated that no Italian participation in a potential multinational force operating in Ukrainian territory is planned. Instead, options for monitoring and training to be conducted outside Ukrainian borders are still being considered, and only in a phase following the cessation of hostilities.
