The Pope and the Secretary General of the UN discussed international crises, upcoming summits, and the role of the United Nations in promoting global stability.
VATICAN CITY. Pope Leo XIV met with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres on the morning of Wednesday, June 11. The meeting, held in the study of the Paul VI Hall in the Vatican, addressed current issues of global interest.
According to a statement released by the Holy See Press Office, after the Audience with the Holy Father, Secretary-General Guterres met with the Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who was accompanied by Monsignor Paul Richard Gallagher, Secretary for Relations with States and International Organizations. The discussions took place in a friendly atmosphere and provided an opportunity to express and reaffirm the support of the Holy See for the actions of the UN in favor of peace in the world. During the conversation, the participants “focused on some ongoing processes and upcoming summits organized by the United Nations, as well as on the difficulties the Organization faces in addressing some crises in the world. Specific conflict and instability situations were also addressed later in the conversation.”
The meeting represented a sign of fruitful dialogue between the Vatican and the UN, highlighting a common focus on major global issues: peace promotion, international cooperation, and protection of human dignity.
