Prime Minister Meloni Voices Concern over Gaza and the West Bank

Italy condemns new settlements and calls for a ceasefire

ROME – Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has expressed deep concern over the recent decisions of the Israeli government regarding the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, reiterating Italy’s commitment to peace and respect for international law.

In a statement released by Palazzo Chigi, Meloni described Israel’s decision to proceed with the occupation of Gaza — launched in response to Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attack — as “a further military escalation” that risks worsening the already dire humanitarian situation in the Strip.

According to the statement, Italy believes that “a collective effort is necessary to achieve a ceasefire and the release of hostages,” while also strengthening international efforts to ensure humanitarian assistance to the civilian population. Rome has declared its readiness to support mediators’ work and to contribute to a possible post-conflict scenario.

Meloni also condemned the authorization of new settlements in the West Bank, calling it “contrary to international law” and potentially harmful to the prospect of a two-state solution and to achieving a just and lasting peace agreement.
