According to some mental health experts, people who claim to find it relaxing to watch true crime series and documentaries about serial killers may be hiding deeper psychological issues.
The psychologist’s reflection: trauma and relaxation
During an episode of the podcast hosted by Mel Robbins, a doctor and mental health expert revealed that relaxing by watching true crime series could be symptomatic of a psychological condition related to trauma. According to the psychologist, those who find this type of content relaxing may do so because they recognize something familiar and, paradoxically, comforting in the traumas of the protagonists.
“If your idea of relaxing before bed is watching three episodes of Law and Order, I encourage you to reflect on why trauma relaxes you,” the doctor stated. This thought suggests that many people who seek refuge in these narratives may unconsciously find relief in seeing situations of high stress depicted, which remind them of their own life experiences.
Trauma as Normalcy: Confusing Tranquility and Boredom
Another crucial concept raised by the psychologist is related to the idea that those who have grown up in situations of high stress or instability may come to confuse tranquility with boredom. “Some of us have grown up in situations of high stress, and therefore confuse tranquility with boredom,” she added. In this sense, constant exposure to dramatic or violent situations could be perceived as reassuring precisely because the brain, accustomed to trauma, cannot find comfort in peace or normalcy.
Although many people find true crime content a source of entertainment, the reflection offered by this psychologist invites greater awareness. If one realizes they are constantly seeking out situations of trauma or violence to relax, it could be helpful to reflect on the deeper reasons behind this habit. Understanding one’s relationship with trauma and how they engage with media content can provide an opportunity to explore any past experiences of stress or discomfort, and to seek solutions that allow for achieving a true state of psychological well-being.
