Surrogacy: Italy Brings Its Law to the ONU

The associations of the “Ditelo sui tetti” network commend the cultural battle in defense of women and children.

NEW YORK (USA) – Italy’s Minister for Family, Birthrate, and Equal Opportunities, Eugenia Roccella, brought Italy’s position on surrogacy to the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, reiterating the need for international action against a practice she described as violating the dignity of women and children.

The network of associations “Ditelo sui tetti” expressed its support for the intervention in a statement, highlighting that Italy was mentioned by the UN Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women, Reem Alsalem, as a positive example for having introduced legislation that punishes surrogacy even when carried out abroad by Italian citizens.

“We sincerely thank Minister Roccella for the contribution she is bringing to the UN,” said spokespersons Domenico Menorello and Achiropita Curti. “Italian legislation is rooted in an anthropological awareness that cannot accept women and children becoming the objects of contracts, reducing human relationships to the mercy of the strongest.”

The network emphasized that the Italian law represents a “cultural stronghold” in defense of women and unborn life, the result of a political and social journey in which Minister Roccella has been consistently engaged with clarity and determination.

The associations expressed hope that the Minister’s address will be listened to carefully by international bodies, so that a shared effort may grow against the commodification of the female body and in defense of the most vulnerable.
