At a crucial moment for global balances and for the ethical challenges posed by technological progress, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni today had a phone conversation with His Holiness Pope Leo XIV, recently elected to the Papal Throne
ROME. During the conversation, Meloni expressed to the new Pontiff the warmest congratulations, both personally and on behalf of the Italian Government, renewing the deep historical and spiritual bond that unites Italy with the Holy See and, in particular, the role of the Pope as a moral and spiritual guide for millions of believers around the world.
The meeting also represented a moment of shared reflection on the major international challenges, with a specific focus on crisis scenarios where armed conflicts continue to threaten stability and human dignity. Meloni emphasized Italy’s appreciation for the role of the Holy See as a voice of peace, a bridge for dialogue, and a promoter of diplomatic solutions in war-torn contexts.
One of the central themes of the meeting was the common commitment to ethical development of artificial intelligence, a question that Meloni has put at the forefront during the Italian Presidency of the G7. The Prime Minister reiterated the need for the digital revolution to be guided by human, inclusive, and just principles, so that technological innovation does not become a new tool of inequality or domination, but remains in service of humanity and its dignity.
On this subject, there was full harmony with Pope Leo XIV, who, on May 10, during his first official meeting with the College of Cardinals, had already launched an appeal for a “technological humanism”, inviting governments and institutions not to retreat in protecting the human being from every form of technological alienation.
The meeting concluded with a joint commitment to strengthen the collaboration between the Italian State and the Holy See, both on the issues of peace and global justice, and on the front of the new challenges posed by scientific and digital progress, in line with a vision that places the person at the center of development.
The dialogue between secular and spiritual institutions, in this context, confirms itself as a fundamental pillar to address the epochal transformations of our time with responsibility and humanity.
