Artificial intelligence, commonly known as AI, has become a daily tool for everyone, young and old, and has firmly entered the business world. The promises of efficiency, innovation, and speed in achieving goals have gained the trust of people and companies.
The Dangers
The shortcut of “do it with AI” hides many pitfalls, and falling into error is very easy.
The use and abuse of AI, to the detriment of the use of the human mind, also leads to a kind of brain atrophy, akin to a new form of ignorance.
For some time we have realized that we no longer know how to do a simple addition without using a calculator, but this was just the beginning. Today we have forgotten dates and history, phone numbers and recipes, so I ask Google. And words, there is always the spell checker.
But there is also something worse, for example it can happen that algorithms make mistakes. This can cause multiple damages both economic, legal, and reputational. And this happens much more often than you might think.
The Lloyd’s Policy
The Financial Times has reported a new development coming from London. Some insurers at Lloyd’s of London have launched a policy that covers companies from losses caused by malfunctions of AI tools, such as chatbots and virtual assistants.
An AI error insurance policy will soon be available for purchase. The insurance product covers businesses in the event of legal disputes with customers, or third parties who have suffered damages due to the wrongful behavior of the AI. The policy will cover both the payment of any compensation and legal expenses, and will be underwritten by multiple insurers active in the Lloyd’s market.
To err is human, even for an artist
Nowadays, we search for any information we want on Google or similar search engines. For example, if I want to know something about Gianna Nannini, the search engine will tell me that she is an Italian actress, musician, etc. But Nannini is a singer, or rather a singer-songwriter, and she has never been an actress. Where does the error come from? Probably from the fact that she has written music for some movies and recently a movie about her life has been released, portrayed by another person. It is up to human intelligence, if it is still active, to discern between right and wrong.
This is a trivial example, but what about Donald Trump still being recognized as the former President of the United States by some AI programs? Can someone kindly inform AI that he has already been elected as President of the USA in November 2024?
