The story behind the “Stop Hiring Humans” billboards in San Francisco

2 Mins read

An Artisan provocative advertising campaign has sparked controversy and curiosity with the slogan “Stop Hiring Humans”, turning into a viral and media phenomenon

San Francisco. Driving through the streets of San Francisco, it’s impossible not to notice the numerous billboards competing for attention. Most of them blend into a sea of generic messages about artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and business solutions. But one in particular has sparked controversy and curiosity: “Stop Hiring Humans”.

The campaign was launched by Artisan, a startup that develops AI-based solutions, particularly a product called Ava, an AI-based Sales Development Representative (SDR). In order to stand out in an increasingly competitive market, Artisan chose to dare with a provocative message.

The strategy behind the controversy

For a Seed stage startup, investing in traditional advertising may seem like a risky and counterintuitive choice. Why spend resources on billboards when you can optimize customer acquisition costs on digital channels?

However, the Artisan team understood that to stand out in a saturated market, it is not enough to follow conventions. The goal was clear: to make a name for themselves and ensure that the name Artisan became associated with the concept of “AI employees.”

The chosen message was deliberately bold: “Stop Hiring Humans”. This main slogan was accompanied by other equally provocative claims, such as “Artisans Won’t Complain About Work-Life Balance”, “Humans Are So 2023”, “Artisans Won’t Come Into Work Hungover”, and “Hire Artisans, Not Humans”. Each phrase was accompanied by the image of Ava, the human-looking AI SDR.

The Launch and Viral Explosion

The first billboard, with a human spelling error (“Stop Hirring Humans”Stop hiring humans with a typo), was strategically placed along the road connecting SFO airport to San Francisco on the same day Artisan sponsored TechCrunch Disrupt.

The result? An initial tweet quickly gained nearly 5,000 likes and reached 250,000 people. Artisan then further capitalized on the wave by posting a photo of their booth on Reddit with the caption: “Hired humans telling you to stop hiring humans.”. That post gathered 35,000 upvotes and millions of views.

Reflections on the success of the campaign

Despite the criticism and thousands of negative comments, the campaign had an extraordinary impact. Artisan recorded tens of millions of impressions, hundreds of articles dedicated to the initiative, and some of the most significant months of growth in its history.

The CEO of Artisan stated: “Our goal was clear: we wanted to be remembered. And yes, it was worth it.”

The “Stop Hiring Humans” campaign was not just a marketing stunt, but a provocative reflection on the role of artificial intelligence in the modern workplace. An example of how a controversial message, if well orchestrated, can turn into an incredible commercial and media success.
