Traveling Safely: From Individuals to Groups, Why Insurance Makes the Difference

2 Mins read

International departures have renewed attention on traveler safety. It is not uncommon for a medical emergency to turn a vacation or a business trip into an unexpected and difficult expense, especially in countries where healthcare costs are high and access procedures are complex.

The need for insurance coverage concerns both those traveling alone and those moving in groups. In both cases, having immediate assistance becomes a decisive factor to protect oneself from unforeseen events when far from home.

The Burden of Healthcare in Individual Travel

For solo travelers, health remains the most delicate aspect. A medical emergency can lead to expenses that vary drastically from country to country, ranging from manageable amounts to sums difficult to afford without proper coverage. In the United States, a single day of hospitalization can exceed two thousand dollars, while in Australia, a private outpatient visit costs several hundred dollars. According to Eurostat, EU citizens who needed medical care while abroad spent on average over one thousand euros per service, with higher costs in countries without agreements with European healthcare systems. Therefore, the best travel health insurance becomes crucial to contain the economic impact and ensure quick access to care in complex contexts.

Without the immediate support of family or friends, managing an emergency falls entirely on the individual. A 24/7 assistance service allows travelers to find reliable facilities, interact with local hospitals, and navigate bureaucratic procedures that, without help, could end a trip prematurely.

Group Travel and Dedicated Coverage

According to ISTAT, over one and a half million Italian students participate annually in school trips abroad. To these are added sports and cultural association trips, as well as holidays shared by families and groups of friends. In these situations, an unexpected event does not affect just one person but can halt the entire group: a health emergency requiring assistance, loss of luggage with documents, or flight cancellations become common problems with immediate impacts on dozens of people. Group travel insurance is designed to meet these needs by ensuring that all participants have the same protection and that emergency procedures are managed in a coordinated way.

In school trips, responsibility falls on teachers who must look after students’ health and safety even in countries with very different healthcare systems. The same applies to sports or cultural trips, where an accident can trigger a series of complex decisions for leaders and chaperones. Shared coverage allows contacting a single point of reference able to activate medical care, organize returns, and cover unexpected expenses. This enables the group to continue the experience without one isolated incident compromising the entire plan.

International Mobility and the Central Role of Insurance

The recovery of Italian tourism has brought mobility back to pre-pandemic levels. In 2024, international trips surpassed 28 million according to ISTAT, while stays in accommodation facilities reached 458 million, a 2.5 percent increase over the previous year. Beyond Europe, long-haul destinations such as the United States and Asia have also grown, indicating a stable preference for complex and costly itineraries.

This expansion has highlighted the need for prevention. Traveling outside the EU means facing healthcare systems with high fees and often complicated procedures. According to ENIT, over 40 percent of those choosing destinations outside Europe consider it essential to travel with health insurance, showing how insurance has become a top priority for travelers.

The picture that emerges is one of increasingly international tourism that is also more aware of risks. Insurance is not a mere accessory but a safeguard that enables continuous travel. It allows individual travelers and groups to move without fearing that a health or organizational problem will cancel months of preparation and the entire financial investment.
