At the Fencing Grand Prix in Medellin, Alberta Santuccio triumphs, silver for Matteo Galassi and bronze for Simone Mencarelli
MEDELLIN – The blue team of foil returns from the Grand Prix of Medellin with a beautiful triple medal win. Alberta Santuccio triumphs in the women’s competition, achieving her third career victory in the World Cup. Then in the men’s event, silver for Matteo Galassi and bronze for Simone Mencarelli.
The final stage of Coppadal from May 22 to 24 will be split, with the women in St.Maur in France and the men on the Swiss platforms of Bern. The season will then conclude with the European Championships in June in Tallinn and the World Championships in Hong Kong in July.
Santuccio Success
An amazing season for Alberta Santuccio, with her fourth medal of the season and twelfth overall in World Cup. The athlete from Catania first defeated the Hungarian Buki (15-9) and then the Korean Lee (15-13). In the round of 16, the Italian beat the German Ehler 13-9, securing a medal against the French Alexandra Louis Marie with a score of 15-10.
In the semifinals, it was the turn of the other French competitor Marie-Florence Candassamy, defeated 11-9. The final saw the Italian Olympian face the Hungarian Eszter Muhari. A balanced and intense match with the Italian athlete skillfully coming back and landing the final hit for a decisive 13-12.
Galassi and Mencarelli on the podium
After the unexpected elimination in the first round of the Under 23 European Championships in Cagliari, Matteo Galassi and Simone Mencarelli are celebrating again.
The Romagnolo started by defeating the Frenchman Midelton (15-13) and in the round of 16, he beat another Frenchman, Billa, 15-8. Galassi then defeated the third Frenchman in a row, overcoming Gally 15-12. In the quarter-finals, the Italian triumphed over the Dutchman Tristan Tulen 15-10. In the semi-finals, he faced his fellow countryman Mencarelli, winning the match 15-11.
In the final, the twenty-one-year-old blue fencer lost to the Japanese Koki Kano, but still brought home a beautiful silver medal, his fourth in the World Cup, and his first in a Grand Prix.
The fencer from Turin, representing Fiamme Oro, who came from the qualifiers, won the first match with the last hit against the Japanese Komata (15-14) and then defeated the Danish Jorgensen 15-8. The next match against the Canadian Ruibo Xiao went to extra time, with the Italian closing it at 14-13. In the quarter-finals, Mencarelli also eliminated the Ukrainian Nikita Koshman 15-7. In the semi-finals, as mentioned, he faced defeat in the derby and secured third place for his second medal of the season after the one won in Doha.
