The possibility of a Putin-Zelensky meeting by the end of August is a plausible but equally complex scenario.
There seem to be some openings, and European diplomacy is moving quickly, unfortunately amid the bombings. For the summit in question, in any case, Putin reportedly suggested Moscow aloud—a proposal that was immediately rejected. For this reason, work is underway to identify a location that could satisfy all parties; Budapest is being mentioned, keeping in mind that there is an international arrest warrant pending against Putin.
What remains particularly sensitive is the dispute over territorial issues, a topic not addressed during the White House meeting, while the leaders focused on security guarantees for Ukraine, another key point in the Moscow-Kiev conflict.
It is also certain that Zelensky, as expected, rejected all of Putin’s proposals during the Alaska meeting regarding territorial concessions and language rights, which should be granted well before any conflict freeze and security guarantees for Ukraine. Donald Trump is reportedly ready for a possible supply delivery exclusively by air, excluding American ground troops, and on this front Macron seems to have been left alone.
The tycoon’s intention is to let Putin and Zelensky meet alone, but it seems he is planning a trilateral meeting: Putin, Zelensky, Trump. Perhaps this is the last move to reach maturity toward what many are awaiting, in this barely concealed discontinuity that follows three years of bloody conflict. The silence of arms is awaited by all, with conditions that will be decisive. Summit after summit.
