Venice and Bangkok United by a New Agreement

A collaboration pact between the two water cities was signed at Ca’ Farsetti: climate resilience, sustainable tourism, innovation, and cultural exchange are at the heart of the agreement

VENICE – A bond that dates back to 1869, when the King of Siam visited Venice and brought Byzantine influences to Bangkok’s art and architecture, is renewed today through a new collaboration agreement between the two cities.

The so-called “Venice of the East”, built on islands and canals, was welcomed at Ca’ Farsetti for the official signing with the Mayor of Venice and the Governor of Bangkok. The agreement marks the beginning of a structured path of cooperation, under the banner of water, tradition, and innovation, which both cities share.

Venice, a natural bridge between worlds, and Bangkok, the creative and dynamic capital of Southeast Asia, have identified several strategic areas for collaboration: from flood protection to climate change resilience, from the sustainable management of tourist flows to technological innovation and the use of data to improve urban livability and safety. The Thai delegation visited the Smart Control Room, the MOSE system, and the Veritas facilities — concrete examples of advanced territorial management.

Special attention will be given to culture, with artistic co-productions, exchange programs for young curators, and collaborations between universities, businesses, and artisanal crafts.

Both cities, members of the international association “Mayor of Peace”, emphasized their intention to strengthen dialogue not only between local administrations but also between their respective countries: a visit from the Prime Minister to Thailand is already planned.

An agreement that renews a centuries-old friendship and opens new avenues for cooperation between two symbolic cities, united by water and by the ability to turn their history into a future.
