Toyota launches KINTO Share with hydrogen: three Toyota Mirai for Italy’s first “zero emissions” public car sharing

VENICE — A small fleet, but a big step towards sustainable mobility. The Municipality of Venice and KINTO Italia inaugurated yesterday in Mestre, at Forte Marghera, the country’s first public hydrogen car sharing service. The protagonists are three Toyota Mirai, electric fuel cell sedans, which are added to the already operational KINTO Share fleet in the city.

Vehicles are now available at two strategic locations: the multi-storey car park at the former Grinfan Area in Piazzale Roma and the dedicated space in front of the arrivals area at Marco Polo airport. Mirai can be booked via the app in both round trip and one way mode, and can be refueled in just five minutes at the Enilive station in San Giuliano, providing up to 650 km of range.

“Venice confirms itself as the national laboratory for the green transition,” commented Mayor Luigi Brugnaro, recalling the opening in 2022 of Italy’s first hydrogen refueling station and the arrival, last year, of fuel cell buses. Another piece, he added, towards becoming the ‘World Capital of Sustainability’.”

For Mauro Caruccio, CEO and Chairman of KINTO Italia, the initiative crowns a collaboration that started in 2018, when the municipal car sharing service came under the KINTO brand with a fully hybrid fleet. Today it has over 6,000 registered users and more than 63,000 rentals, with an estimated savings of 72 tonnes of CO₂.

The debut follows a testing phase started in 2024 with a small group of users: a trial that confirmed the interest in hydrogen technology. The vehicles, customized with KINTO livery and refueling instructions, will be monitored daily by a dedicated team to ensure efficiency and autonomy.

The initiative is part of Toyota’s multi-technology strategy, which has been producing the Mirai – “future” in Japanese – since 2014, with over 27,000 units already in circulation in countries with adequate infrastructure. In Venice, the future can now be booked with a tap.
