Giovanni Marseguerra relaunches the values of the social doctrine of the Church as a guide to respond to the challenges of our time: dignity, solidarity, and the common good at the center of a new social pact
ROME – In a time marked by profound social, economic, and cultural transformations, the question of how to build a fairer, more united, and more humane society resonates strongly. Professor Giovanni Marseguerra, president of the Scientific Committee of the Centesimus Annus pro Pontifice Foundation, outlined the coordinates during the foundation’s annual international conference. Marseguerra reflected on the themes of social dialogue and civil cohesion.
“How to get out of this situation? How to embark on a path towards a landing of greater brotherhood and social friendship?” asks Marseguerra, launching a reflection that involves not only institutions, but every single citizen. According to Marseguerra, the answer lies in rediscovering the foundational values of the Church’s social doctrine, which serve as a compass to guide the construction of a new model of coexistence.
Among these values, Marseguerra particularly emphasizes solidarity, subsidiarity, the common good, and human dignity, key elements for a sustainable and humane future. However, these are not abstract principles reserved for political or academic spheres alone: “This new society arises from the behaviors of each of us, from our ability to dialogue, to build relationships, to build bridges. And bridges are built from the bottom up,” he emphasizes.
During the two days of work promoted by the Foundation, Marseguerra highlighted how numerous concrete experiences, initiatives, and testimonies emerged as seeds of hope towards that “more fraternal society” hoped for. An objective that is not taken for granted, nor guaranteed, but largely depends on individual and collective responsibility, on the willingness to act in the name of a good that is truly shared.
The message conveyed is clear: the reconstruction of social fabric is not only a task for institutions, but an ethical and cultural challenge that involves everyone, starting from daily gestures and interpersonal relationships. Marseguerra’s invitation is not to remain spectators of change, but to become artisans of a fairer, more supportive, and more humane future.
