Villach, the fairy‐tale Christmas between lights and tradition

1 Mins read

From November 14 to January 6, the Carinthian city transforms into an enchanted village with Christmas markets, shows, and unique atmospheres.

VILLACH (AUSTRIA) – Villach is ready to dress in its brightest attire. From November 14, 2025, to January 6, 2026, the Carinthian city will host the Villacher Advent, the Christmas market that annually attracts thousands of visitors from across Europe and transforms the historic center into an enchanted stage filled with sparkling lights, spicy scents, and timeless traditions.

The streets around St. Jakob’s Church and along 10.-Oktober-Strasse will welcome characteristic wooden huts, a life-size nativity scene, and about 30 vendors offering crafts, decorations, and gastronomic specialties. After December 24, the village will renew itself with events dedicated to New Year’s 2026, culminating on December 31 with live concerts and an exciting laser show lighting up the sky to welcome the new year.

Nikolaiplatz: Where Art Meets Christmas

Another vibrant heart of the festivities is Nikolaiplatz, hosting the Artistic Advent. Here, local craftsmanship takes center stage with unique creations and artworks in a market that blends creativity and spirituality, set against the illuminated backdrop of St. Nicholas Church.

Fun for All Ages

Christmas in Villach is designed for the whole family. Rathausplatz will feature a large ice skating rink, open until February, offering the thrill of gliding on ice beneath a sky of lights. There will also be a Christmas train, rides, and ponies, much loved by children.

Alpine Folklore and Traditions

The event calendar weaves celebration and tradition. On November 28, the spectacular parade of the Perchten and Krampus—figures from Alpine folklore—will roam the city streets to drive away negative energies. On December 21, Hans-Gasser-Platz will host the Bauernadvent, the Farmer’s Advent, a moment of reflection celebrating the arrival of Baby Jesus accompanied by the Magi and angels.

Shopping and Tastes

Next to the market stalls in the center, food huts will offer typical dishes, sweets, and hot drinks. Less than two kilometers from the city center, the Atrio shopping mall will complete the offer with over 90 shops and a Christmas market arranged around the large central tree.

A Christmas to Experience

With its markets, enchanting atmosphere, popular traditions, and events that bring together young and old, Villach confirms itself as one of the most evocative destinations for those wishing to live an authentic Christmas, full of magic, taste, and Alpine culture.
