A 3D-printed liver for pediatric surgery

Created an innovative three-dimensional anatomical model of a liver used for planning a delicate surgical procedure in one of the main pediatric hospitals in Italy

Treviso – SolidWorld Group S.p.A., has recently contributed to the creation of a sophisticated three-dimensional anatomical model of a liver used in the preparation for a high-complexity surgical intervention.

This involved young patients at a leading pediatric hospital of international significance operating in Italy. An operation made possible thanks to Bio3DPrinting, a company of the SolidWorld Group specialized in additive manufacturing technologies and a long-time partner of Stratasys in Italy.

The Company is listed on the Euronext Growth Milan market (ticker: S3D) and is a leading Italian technology group in the integration of advanced 3D digital solutions with Artificial Intelligence (AI) for the industrial, biomedical, and defense sectors.

In a historical period where 3D printing is becoming an increasingly strategic tool to support advanced medicine, this project represents a tangible example of how digital technologies and 3D printing can assist medical teams in planning particularly delicate procedures.

In the case study, the three-dimensional model of the liver was developed from anatomical data processed by the clinical team involved in the case and subsequently produced by Bio3DPrinting using a high-precision Stratasys 3D printer (model J5 MediJet) capable of faithfully reproducing complex anatomical structures as well as spatial relationships that are difficult to appreciate
with traditional diagnostic images alone.

The three-dimensional apparatus produced has thus allowed surgeons to study the intervention in advance, simultaneously simulating the different operational phases to better assess potential critical issues before entering the operating room. An approach that therefore contributes to improving the team’s preparation, optimizing surgical times and increasing the level of safety in more complex procedures.

This technological innovation confirms the growing role of 3D printing in the “healthcare” sector, where the ability to transform radiological and diagnostic data into high-fidelity physical models is opening new perspectives in personalized surgery, medical training, and communication with patients and their families.
