Two earthquakes, just seconds apart, with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, classified as catastrophic, have been recorded by the United States Geological Survey. They occurred at different locations and depths, west of Caracas.
Venezuela – The hardest-hit state is La Guaira. There are dozens of damaged buildings. It is a true disaster. The scenes are terrible: numerous buildings have collapsed and the disruption of telephone networks hinders rescue efforts.
In La Guaira, the port center 40 kilometers from the capital, the situation is described as apocalyptic. At least 30 buildings have completely collapsed, including the Eduard hotel and several seaside apartment complexes: at least two had twenty floors. There are numerous fires caused by gas leaks, while rescue teams have no bulldozers or cranes to dig through the rubble.
Currently, Minister Tajani has communicated that there are no reported deaths among Italians. We will follow this immense tragedy.
