The Golden Gala Pietro Mennea in Rome starts tomorrow. Among the 16 Italian athletes present, all the big names with the showdown between Olympic champions in the 100 meters
ROME – The wait is almost over. Tomorrow, Thursday, June 4, at the Olympic Stadium in Rome, the Golden Gala Pietro Mennea will begin, the Italian leg of the Wanda Diamond League. Alongside the world athletics stars, there will be 16 Italian athletes on the home tracks and fields.
Surely the most anticipated event will be the 100 meters race, which will see the two Olympic champions Marcell Jacobs and Noah Lyles face off, along with Letsile Tebogo. There is also great hope for Nadia Battocletti, who will try to improve her 14:23.15 in the 5000 meters. Andy Diaz, on the other hand, will jump the triple for history. In fact, only Alessandro Lambruschini has managed to win in Rome three times.
It is the same Jacobs who calls the public together with a video message posted on the Instagram pages @goldengala_official and @atleticaitaliana: “There is less and less time until June 4th. We are waiting for you in large numbers, we need your support and your cheers. See you at the Olympic Stadium!“
The presence of Mattia Furlani in the long jump is still uncertain due to an injury. He will most likely not participate in the meeting but will be at the Olympic Stadium to receive the fans’ support. Gabriele Chilà has also been invited, who last week achieved a remarkable 8.24 with a slight tailwind (+2.1) in Castelporziano. Joining him in the competition will be Miltiadis Tentoglou, Bozhidar Saraboyukov, Gerson Baldé, and Wayne Pinnock.
Among the news of the blue team, it is worth mentioning the debut of Elisa Valensin in the 200 meters. For the European U20 champion with the 4×100 and previously continental U18 gold in the 200, it will be a first time in the Diamond League against legends such as Melissa Jefferson-Wooden and Julien Alfred.
First time also for Giovanni Frattini in the javelin with Thomas Rohler, Anderson Peters, and Julius Yego capable of surpassing 92 meters.
In the weight category, the presence of the European champion on the platform in Rome two years ago Leonardo Fabbri and the new dad Zane Weir is confirmed. The Italians will face the three-time Olympic champion Ryan Crouser and other multi-medalists Joe Kovacs and Tom Walsh.
On the track, there will be Anna Polinari in the 400 meters, Francesco Pernici in the 800, Gaia Sabbatini and Ludovica Cavalli in the 1500, and the Italian record holders in the 100 hurdles and 400 hurdles Giada Carmassi and Ayomide Folorunso. However, the European champion in the 110 hurdles Lorenzo Simonelli will be absent.
