At the cloister of the M9 Museum on Sunday, May 17, the announcement of the winner, as well as the special mentions of the 2026 edition of the ex-tempore competition “Watercolors in Freedom” took place.
Organized by the Circolo Veneto, the Università Popolare Mestre, and Unitre Mestre, with the sponsorship of the Veneto Region, the Metropolitan City, and the Municipality of Venice, the ex-tempore competition “Acquerelli in Libertà” has once again showcased all its qualities, combined with the emotions that painting can evoke. This event also has a noble and charitable intent, as the works of the participants will be donated to the organization. This heritage will in turn be allocated to charitable entities. Ex tempore, meaning all in one day, in a competition where artists create their works live, from morning until dusk, en plein air. It is beautiful to think how each participant has chosen a beloved or perhaps spontaneous location in Mestre, to arrive at a final result that, beyond its artistic value, achieved through talent, expresses a completely personal message. Traversing with the tip of the brush the magnificent competition that has given them the opportunity to reveal their skills and creativity, beauty. And in the background, the host, watercolor, that painting technique which, as highlighted by the winner Gastone Varagnolo in our interview right after the awards ceremony, represents a final goal to be reached by capturing the moment, the glimpse, the framing of the picture, the light, the colors, and the transparency. And from this final postcard, one can understand how much passion reigns in a technique that manages to finalize an idea, a dream, a perfect transformation of the soul.
