In the second qualifying phase for the FIBA World Cup 2027, ItalBasket will face Turkey, Serbia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina
A tough group, but the men’s national basketball team will face it strong with the second place in the standings earned with the stunning victory against Lithuania. ItalBasket has been placed in the new J of the second qualifying phase for the FIBA World Cup 2027, the World Cup that will be held next year in Doha, Qatar.
The Azzurri managed to finish in first place in Group D with 5 wins and only one loss (at home against Iceland). In the newly formed group, the top three teams from this group join those from Group C, carrying over their previous points. Italy thus starts the second phase in second place behind Turkey (6/0) and ahead of Serbia (4/2), Lithuania (3/3), Iceland (3/3), and Bosnia and Herzegovina (2/4).
The new journey will begin on August 28 at home against the latter, followed by a home match against Serbia on August 31. The next home game will be against Turkey on November 26, and then an away match against Serbia on November 29. The final window will see Coach Banchi‘s team compete at home against Bosnia on February 26, 2027, and conclude in Turkey on March 1.
The formula
At the World Cup in Doha, Qatar, scheduled from August 27 to September 12, 2027, 32 teams will participate, 12 of which will come from Europe through the FIBA World Cup 2027 European Qualifiers. This tournament includes the 24 teams that played in EuroBasket 2025 and another 8 from the Pre-Qualifiers.
In the first round, 8 groups of 4 teams each were formed, competing in home and away matches, with the top three teams from each group qualifying for the second round. The 24 qualified teams are now divided into 4 additional groups of 6 teams each (matchups A-B, C-D, E-F, G-H), carrying with them the results obtained against all the teams faced in the first phase.
Matches are played in home and away format between teams that have not already faced each other in the first round. The top three teams from each of the 4 groups qualify for the World Cup.
