I thought of Napoleon and the dishonor of Golgotha when I learned of the new attack by President Trump against our Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni: there can only be one reaction from all of us Italians, which is solidarity with our Premier
ROME. When a man or woman of the Institutions is the target of attack, offense, or slander, the solidarity reaction must be unanimous. If the targets of Trump’s accusations had been Conte or Schlein, nothing would have changed; the call for solidarity would have been equally felt and participated in.
Trump’s words offend all of us, as Italians, as citizens of a sovereign state that must demand respect for its citizens, from the housewife of Voghera to the Prime Minister.
In these hours, the alliance with the United States is not in question: the American people are greater than those who represent them today, just as in the past, during fascism, we Italians were greater than those who led the fate of our nation: in fact, in the battlefields, in Russia or in German prison camps, more antifascist Italians died than fascist Italians. But they were always Italians. Political leaders come and go, but the positive principles, the ideals of peace and collaboration that have made nations and the West great remain.
Trump’s words to President Meloni call on everyone, including European countries: it is an attack that offends Western civilization. For this reason, we must go beyond, we must respond to evil with good.
Trump’s attacks on President Meloni must be the seed from which not an anti-American or anti-Trump spirit arises, absolutely not! On the contrary, Trump’s attacks on Meloni must be the seed from which to cultivate a new spirit of national unity that should not lead to a sort of new nationalism but to a political project that marks a real change in the ways of doing politics, a real change in how our young people should be educated in the peaceful values of civil coexistence.
My fear, in fact, is that behind President Trump’s words there lies an attempt at U.S. interference in our domestic affairs, aimed at discrediting the person and actions of the Prime Minister and thus creating fertile ground for political projects in line with the political agenda of those currently residing in the White House.
I am certain, however, that this is just my thought, perhaps dictated by the fear that a new Via Fani may happen. For this reason, I invite everyone to a chain of solidarity on social media: #istandwithGiorgiaMeloni#istandwithdemocracy: a sign to make it clear that those who offend the Prime Minister offend each and every one of us. Italians do not respond by attacking or insulting: Italians respond by feeling united, supportive, certain of the values of good and peace that have characterized their history.
