With 10 golds and a total of 22 medals, the blue team wins the medal table at the European Athletics Championships, beating the home British team
BIRMINGHAM (ENGLAND) – At home. Just like in 2021 in the football final at Wembley. Epic, like the victory of our four cross-country skiers at the Winter Olympics in Lillehammer 1994 in the 4x10km relay. Let’s say it, winning is already beautiful in itself, but doing it against all odds in the home of the heavily favored opponents adds that extra flavor.
A fight until the last hundredth of a second, and when it seemed that everything was fading away, here comes the extraordinary historic first victory of the 4×400 made up of Edoardo Scotti, Luca Sito, Mohamed Soudassi and Lorenzo Benati. The last gold in the final race, adding to the one won by Larissa Iapichino in the long jump and the bronze of the women’s relay composed of Alessandra Bonora, Anna Polinari, Alice Mangione and Eloisa Coiro.
Final tally: 10 golds, 6 silvers, and 6 bronzes for a total of 22 medals and the medal table win for the second consecutive time after the glories of Rome 2024 and the points ranking. 226 thanks to the matched record of 45 finalists. Second is Great Britain with 9 golds, 8 silvers, and 2 bronzes (19 in total), third is Germany with 6-10-5 (total of 21). The same result for the points ranking with the British at 211.5 and the Germans at 196.
These incredible results are complemented by two Italians awarded among the top ten results of the event, with a bonus of 50,000 euros, Massimo Stano and Sofia Fiorini, both gold medalists in the race walking marathon.
The Italian national team is probably the strongest ever, despite the injuries of two other potential gold medalists like Mattia Furlani and Marcell Jacobs. All of this comes two years before the next Olympic Games in Los Angeles 2028.
