An intervention intended to make a mark on the Spanish public debate. In front of the Parliament of Madrid, Pope Leo XIV addressed some of the most sensitive issues on the contemporary political agenda, from the protection of life to the management of migration flows, from religious freedom to the challenges posed by artificial intelligence and rearmament
SPAIN. Many observers expected a speech based on general principles. Instead, the Pope chose to clearly address issues that have divided Spanish society for years, reminding politics of the centrality of the person and the responsibility towards the most vulnerable.
One of the most significant steps concerned the value of human life. Referring to the teachings of Benedict XVI and Pope Francis, Leo XIV emphasized that every legal system finds its foundation in the recognition of the inviolable dignity of the person.
According to the Pope, a truly just society cannot overlook those who live in conditions of particular vulnerability: the unborn child, the elderly, the sick, and those who depend on the assistance of others.
The defense of life, he explained, does not represent a confessional battle, but a fundamental element of civilization. Hence the call to recognize and protect every human existence from conception to natural death.
Migrations: a challenge that concerns everyone
Another central theme was that of migration, particularly relevant for Spain, the gateway to Europe for thousands of people coming from Africa.
Leone XIV reiterated the need for an approach that puts people at the center and not just the management of flows. On one hand, he called for legal and safe pathways for those forced to migrate; on the other hand, he emphasized the right of people to be able to stay in their own land, addressing the causes that drive forced departures such as wars, poverty, and inequalities.
The Pope also called on the international community for shared responsibility, highlighting how no country can face such a phenomenon alone.
Peace and Critique of the Logic of Rearmament
In his speech, the Pope also addressed the issue of international security, at a time marked by numerous conflicts and geopolitical tensions.
For Leo XIV, peace cannot be built solely through the strengthening of military arsenals. While recognizing the complexity of the global scenario, he urged governments to prioritize dialogue, international law, and diplomacy as fundamental tools for conflict prevention.
Particular attention has been given to new technologies applied to warfare. Artificial intelligence and automated systems, the Pope warned, require strict ethical oversight so that decisions concerning human life are not delegated to processes devoid of moral responsibility.
Religious Freedom and Public Space
Another significant step concerned the relationship between the State and the religious phenomenon, a topic particularly debated in Spain also in light of recent legislative proposals on freedom of expression and the protection of religious symbols and beliefs.
Leo XIV reiterated that the secular nature of institutions should not translate into the exclusion of the religious dimension from public life. Faith, he stated, does not seek privileges but cannot be considered irrelevant to the common good either.
In this context, the Pope defended the value of religious freedom and emphasized the importance of the confessional seal, considering it a space of inner freedom that deserves legal protection.
Overall, Pope Leo XIV’s first address to the Spanish Parliament was a broad appeal to the ethical foundations of democratic coexistence.
Without directly entering into party dynamics, the Pope has indicated some principles that he considers essential for the future of Western societies: the protection of life, solidarity towards migrants, religious freedom, the pursuit of peace, and a responsible use of new technologies.
