The sound of a unique instrument, a story that crosses the Mediterranean and Sardinia, and the daylight slowly taking the place of the night. Sunday, August 16, at 6 AM at Balai Beach in Porto Torres, one of the most awaited and representative events of Musica sulle Bocche returns, the international festival directed by Enzo Favata, now in its XXVI edition. The protagonist of the concert will be Mauro Mibelli, a Sardinian guitarist and composer who will present the project Story of two men and a piece of wood, a musical tale born from the encounter with the luthier Antonello Saccu and the creation of an extraordinary double-neck guitar.
The appointment renews one of the distinctive features of Musica sulle Bocche. The festival was indeed the first in Sardinia to inaugurate the formula of live concerts at dawn and sunset, transforming the landscape and natural light into essential elements of the musical experience. A formula that has become a true must over the years, capable of creating a special relationship between artists, audience, and territory.
At the center of Mauro Mibelli’s concert is a story of men, migrations, encounters, and memory, in which wood becomes the thread that connects seemingly distant destinies. It is the story of the Sardinian luthier Antonello Saccu, who moved to Genoa, and the Sardinian musician of Elban origins Mauro Mibelli. Two different paths that end up crossing thanks to a shared passion: that for wood. Mibelli’s family comes from the Island of Elba to trade timber destined for the Italian railways. In Sardinia, those men meet Sardinian women, fall in love, and decide to settle on the island, continuing to work with wood as cabinetmakers.
Antonello Saccu makes the opposite journey: from Pozzomaggiore he moves to Genoa, where he starts his activity as a musical instrument builder in a workshop in the San Martino district. Here too, fate seems to play with coincidences: the workshop belonged to a Genoese family that moved to Olbia, the city where Mauro Mibelli now lives. Thanks to mutual friends, Mibelli and Saccu meet and decide to collaborate on the construction of a one-of-a-kind instrument: a double-neck guitar. From that moment, a story begins to take shape that is destined to change both their lives. The instrument gives rise to new expressive possibilities, unheard sounds, and intense, deep compositions, where musical research, personal memory, and Mediterranean culture intertwine.
At the dawn of Music on the Mouths, Mibelli will bring this story to the stage, entrusting it to the guitars, the double-neck guitar, and the cantabile lute, in a concert particularly in tune with the spirit of the festival: music capable of engaging with the places, the stories of the people, and the landscape.
The event is organized in collaboration with: Municipality of Porto Torres, Chamber of Commerce of Sassari, Foundation of Sardinia, and Autonomous Region of Sardinia.
Mauro Mibelli
A jazz-trained musician, Mauro Mibelli attended the Siena seminars and founded Jazzline, one of the first jazz combos in Sardinia, recording an LP with the collaboration of Gianni Basso, one of the great Italian figures in Afro-American jazz music.
Throughout his career, he has collaborated with Paolo Carrus, Flavio Boltro, Maurizio Giammarco, Jimmy Owens, and Giulio Capiozzo, among others. He has also had numerous encounters in the pop music world, with artists such as Enzo Jannacci, Ivan Cattaneo, Paola Atzeni, Antonio Galbiati, Beppe Dettori, and Amii Stewart.
In the following years, his research has increasingly focused on the sounds of the Mediterranean. From this journey, Pater Mediterraneo was born, a project that has won several national awards.
Currently, Mibelli is pursuing projects in close collaboration with Luigi Lai and the Tenore di Bitti Mialinu Pira. At the same time, he composes music for theater, collaborating with Giovanni Carroni and Gianluca Medas, and continues his solo research through original compositions for double-neck guitar and cantabile lute.
