The most evocative part of the entire concert was the section dedicated to Santa Lucia, whose celebration holds a special place in Swedish musical tradition.
In fact, during the darkest time of the year, places and churches are filled with songs, bright lights, and silent reflection. It is a celebration in which music plays a central role as a bearer of light, comfort, and communion.
The Swedish tradition is expressed mainly through choral singing: simple melodies, often collected, and lyrics that revolve around the victory of light over darkness, peace, and anticipation. The character of the music reflects the seasonal contrast, which is identified in the contrast between darkness and light, between silence and resonance. Thus, the Santa Lucia procession, in which girls wear long white dresses with red ribbons and carry a candle in their hands, while one wears a crown of greenery with candles inserted in it on her head, represents both a musical and visual experience.
The choir is made up of 40 girls and is directed by Margereta Raab, accompanied by the organist Nicolas Haig, who particularly enjoyed his vigorous performance on the organ present in the cathedral.
But how did these girls arrive in our city? Thanks to Antonietta Cannizzaro, a singer from the Duomo of Treviso, who went to Sweden for work and then stayed there. So she, along with the choir master of the Treviso Cathedral, Michele Pozzobon, kept in touch and allowed these girls with angelic voices to become known in our area.

As part of the Summer Tour 2026, the choir of Uppsala Cathedral (Uppsala domkyrkas flickkör) has arrived in Treviso, after performing a concert at the Church of Santo Geremia in Venice on Saturday, June 13, and another at the parish church of Scaltenigo on Sunday, June 14.
The concert of Scandinavian music and European composers, with a program dedicated to Saint Lucia according to Swedish tradition, took place in Treviso on Tuesday, June 16 at 8:45 PM at the Treviso Cathedral.
Among the notable pieces, Virgo gloriosa by Angelica Sanger of August Soderman (1872) is considered one of the most significant works of Swedish choral and sacred music.
In the Scandinavian Mass, we also listen to compositions from Sweden, Norway, and Denmark, three countries united by strong and closely related traditions of sacred music.
