Today, in a time characterized by rapid changes and new environmental challenges, these images take on an even deeper meaning. They remind us of the importance of preserving the landscape, promoting sustainability, and keeping the connection with our roots alive, as stated by the President of the Province of Treviso, Marco Donadel, in his greeting within the FAST Notebook that collects these images.
We remind you that the FAST is located in Treviso at via Cal di Breda n. 116, in building n. 5 of the Province of Treviso, where the offices for user services are located.
The photographic materials and equipment that make up the archive’s collection are located in specially designed climate-controlled rooms as required for the preservation of photographs.
Over time, new acquisitions, donations, and entrusted management funds have been added to the initial acquisition. The current size of the archive is about 600,000 photographs, primarily concerning the Veneto region, documenting its urban and economic evolution, major historical events, changes in social customs, etc.
But the photographs collected by FAST are not just period documents: they are living testimonies of communities, trades, traditions, urban transformations, and landscapes that have profoundly marked our territory. Each image therefore gives us an authentic glimpse into the past and invites us to reflect on the relationship between man, environment, and development. A cross-cutting theme that is increasingly pressing in this historical period.

Thinking only of our Treviso, rich in waterways, we realize how much the landscape of Veneto is characterized by this natural element.
To highlight this aspect, the Province of Treviso has proposed an exhibition of a selection of photographs from the Historical Photo Archive of the Province of Treviso (FAST).
In Veneto, in fact, water creates very different landscapes, such as the wide and sinuous basins of the Adige, Brenta, and Piave rivers, the lakes of Cadore dominated by the Dolomite peaks, or the vast natural oasis of the Po River Delta.
These photographs invite us to observe not only the natural heritage but also the cultural heritage accumulated over the centuries near the water: the night shot of the Church of Santa Anastasia takes us back to the monuments of the Lungadige in Verona; the Malcesine Castle to the art routes of the Olive Riviera, on the eastern shore of Lake Garda; the monumental squero of Dolo brings us back to the Naviglio del Brenta, which, with its sumptuous villas, is one of the river segments richest in masterpieces in the world.
The images presented are the work of various Italian photographers and photography studios active in the twentieth century, such as Carlo Bevilacqua, Gino Bolognini, Luigi Bortoluzzi, Giuseppe Bruno, Studio Ferruzzi, Giuseppe Fini, Studio Ghedina, Studio Giacomelli, Ferruccio Leiss, Giuseppe Mazzotti, Paolo Monti, Aldo Nascimben, Toni Nicolini, Bruno Stefani, Gianpaolo Vajenti, Francesco Zambon.
Many of these photographers contributed, to a greater or lesser extent, with their photographs to the identity redefinition of the Veneto territory in the post-war period.
The exhibition was displayed for the first time at Villa Contarini in Piazzola sul Brenta, from
October 2018 to January 2019.
