From June 29 to September 5, boat excursions will resume among the springs of the Timavo, the Castle of Duino, Monfalcone, and San Giovanni in Tuba: a project that combines tourism, history, environment, and the memory of the territory
Trieste – The project “Navigating the Timavo: the river that unites peoples and territories” was presented yesterday at the Rifugio Rilke, an initiative that from June 29 to September 5, 2026 will accompany residents and tourists on a series of evocative boat excursions to discover the mysterious Timavo river and the wonders of the Gulf of Trieste.
Maurizio Lenarduzzi, owner of Marina Timavo – Nautical Shipyard, shared the desire to offer an experience that combines navigation, culture, environment, and the identity of the territory, enhancing the Timavo as a symbol of a unique natural and historical heritage.
In his speech, Lenarduzzi also wanted to remember with emotion the late Serafino Marchio Lunet, creator and historical coordinator of the initiative until last year. His passing has left a great void in the territory.
By taking up his legacy, Marina Timavo chose to continue the initiative, keeping alive its original spirit and continuing the path of enhancement of the Timavo that Marchio Lunet had built with passion, expertise, and deep love for this territory.
The program
The initiative, organized by Marina Timavo – Cantiere Nautico, will take place from June 29 to September 5, 2026, with departures every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday at 10:00 AM, offering participants an immersive experience between the Gulf of Trieste and the famous springs of Timavo.
The excursion starts from the Fisherman’s Village and continues along the spectacular coast of Duino, allowing you to admire from the sea the Duino Castle and the majestic Cliffs that characterize this stretch of coastline. The navigation then continues towards the port of Monfalcone, where it will be possible to observe from a privileged perspective the large ships under construction at the Fincantieri shipyards, an international excellence in Italian shipbuilding.
The route then leads to the famous springs of the Timavo. Here, participants will be welcomed by two guides in ancient Roman attire who will accompany them on a visit to the Church of San Giovanni in Tuba, taking them on a fascinating journey through the history of the renowned Lacus Timavi, a sacred place since Roman times and celebrated over the centuries by poets, travelers, and scholars.
The Timavo represents one of the most fascinating hydrogeological phenomena in Europe: a river that travels kilometers underground in a karst environment before resurfacing just a few steps from the sea.
The experience will conclude with a return to the boarding point, where an aperitif will allow participants to share emotions and impressions experienced during the morning.
Numerous civil, military, and religious authorities participated in the presentation, demonstrating the importance that the project holds for the promotion and enhancement of the entire territory.
The Mayor of the Municipality of Duino Aurisina, Igor Gabrovec, highlighted how initiatives of this kind represent a fundamental tool for promoting quality tourism, respectful of the environment and capable of enhancing the historical, cultural, and landscape heritage of the area.
The Mayor of the Municipality of Monfalcone, Luca Fasan, emphasized the value of the tours passing in front of the Fincantieri facilities, recalling how the shipbuilding tradition of Monfalcone is one of the main economic engines of the area and an industrial heritage of international significance.
Also intervened was don Fabio La Gioia, parish priest of the Church of San Giovanni in Tuba, who brought his greetings highlighting the profound historical, spiritual, and cultural value of the site, which has been a point of reference for the area for centuries and a significant stop on the proposed itinerary. He also emphasized how initiatives of this kind help to promote and enhance a place where nature, history, and faith coexist in a unique balance.
The institutional greeting from the Guardia di Finanza was delivered by Lieutenant Alessandro Chiarella, who expressed appreciation for an initiative capable of combining tourism development, environmental enhancement, and collaboration among institutions.
Also Major Manuel Curreri, Commander of the Carabinieri Company of Aurisina, extended his greetings, emphasizing the importance of synergy between public entities, associations, and local realities in promoting local excellence.
Also present was Alessio Visintin, an inspector of the State Police serving in the Trieste area, who, by his participation, wanted to testify to the closeness of the Law Enforcement to initiatives dedicated to enhancing cultural and environmental heritage.
“Navigating the Timavo” aims to enhance one of the symbolic places of Friuli Venezia Giulia through a form of sustainable and quality tourism, capable of combining culture, environment, history, and local traditions.
